All My Father's Houses
All My Father's Houses

All My Father’s Houses; a catalogue by a builder’s daughter.

My father was a self-employed immigrant builder who, together with his wife and children, made a life for themselves in Australia and a career building ‘first-home-buyer’ houses in the Australian Capital territory.

For the past two years I have been documenting these homes.

All My Father’s Houses; a catalogue by a builder’s daughter is a suite of 32 photographic images that document the ‘spec’ homes built by my father Ivan Mocnik in the Australian Capital Territory between 1980 – 1991.

The images offer a historical and social reading of a particular building style, place and social demographic. Built for the first home-buyer by a European builder, the houses speak of interwoven narratives and the ubiquitous search for place and belonging.

This work has been developed within Frances Mocnik’s MFA candidature at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Australia.
